irrigation installation

Split level roof garden

Here at Rosewood we work on many different types of project, from the smallest of balconies with a few pots and baskets, to acres of palatial grounds. The job shown here is one of the most interesting we’ve been involved with. The architect has not only utilised every available inch of house space, but created a contemporary and innovative split level roof garden, creating a wonderful outside space where otherwise there would be none.

Irrigation to the intermediate and upper level shrub planting was covered using drip-line. Drip-line is extremely environmentally friendly and favoured by the Water Authorities due to its efficiency at conserving precious water supplies. It has pressure compensating anti-syphon emitters at 33cm centres along its length and is pegged into place on the surface of the soil. It works most efficiently if covered with a thin layer of mulch. Drip-line has the benefits of being virtually maintenance free and is exempt from hosepipe bans should future water shortages dictate. It is also very easy to repair should any accidental garden damage occur.

Automatic watering to the lawn proved slightly more difficult to achieve as unlike a normal outside lawn, this one wasn’t very deep. We chose to use a brand new product to the market place, produced by Rainbird, one of the leading and most respected manufacturers of irrigation products. The product to which I refer is an innovative new style of drip-line, which is specifically designed to be installed under turf grass and planted areas.

This new Rainbird XFS drip-line is the ideal solution to the potential difficulties you could experience trying to irrigate a lawn without the usual capacity to store water deep below the surface. All pipework is hidden and there are no over ground components to spoil the aesthetics of the lawn. It’s Copper Shield technology protects the emitters from root intrusion, creating a long lasting, low maintenance drip system. The built in pressure compensating emitters provide constant flow over the entire lateral length, ensuring uniform water distribution. The drip-line also offers dual layered construction providing unmatched resistance to chemicals, algae growth and UV damage. It also offers the benefit that mowing and strimming is possible without having to negotiate any over ground parts, and like normal drip-line, it is exempt from hosepipe bans.

I think you will agree that the finished results of the project are amazing and are absolute proof that any area, no matter what size or shape, can benefit from innovative use of outdoor space, and of course the irrigation to keep things lush and green.

Our new website is working!

We’ve been working really hard to improve our website and for a couple of technophobes I think the headache has paid off. We’ve taken enquiries from customers in Chiswick and Ipswich today and Andy is quoting for a job in Dulwich tomorrow. The best news came earlier that we’ve secured a big irrigation system for a fantastic garden designer, Julien Tatlock, who has been working on this really impressive scheme for a property in Berkhamstead.

Andy was chuffed to bits at the return of the sun – he was adding some extra irrigation to some newly planted borders in Cuffley. Working out in this glorious weather must be such a chore!
