25 Mar Birds Nest in Living Walls
Do you want to encourage wildlife to your outdoor space, but don’t have space for traditional horizontal planting beds? A vertical garden does a great job, and it doesn’t only attract pollinating insects like bees and butterflies. It also provides foraging and resting opportunities for birds and small mammals. In fact, as shown by our photo from a recent routine maintenance visit, the troughs might even become a wren’s home of choice for raising a family. Yes, that’s right – birds nest in living walls!
Our picture shows the wren’s nest we discovered in one of the PlantBox troughs we use as the support for our living walls. To a wren, a green wall looks very similar to a hedge (their favoured nesting site). Not only that, but the trough is stable and secure, with no chance of the nest falling through. Needless to say, we were very careful to avoid disturbing the nest, so hopefully our Hitchin client will soon hear the chirping of tiny beaks.
Just in case you’re wondering, we’ve also seen squirrel drays in our living walls, so you never know who might visit yours.
Get in touch with Rosewood if you’d like to find out more the green wall possibilities where you are. We can design for the smallest of outdoor spaces – even if all you have is a balcony. And if you don’t have an outdoor space, we can design an indoor living wall – although that’s unlikely to attract the wildlife!
