A garden irrigation system does wonders for your plants. Receiving the right amount of water at the right frequency helps gardens thrive, resulting in lush green planting even in a heatwave. But what happens about irrigation during a hosepipe ban? We’re here to answer, and it’s good news!

You’ve probably noticed that we haven’t had much rain recently, and water companies are urging everyone to conserve water as far as possible. A hosepipe ban has recently come into force in our area, and in many other parts of the UK. Hosepipe bans stop water customers using hosepipes, and bans often extend to many standard irrigation systems. Traditional sprinklers and other irrigation methods that spray water above the ground may waste some through evaporation or overspray, so we understand the concern. However, Rosewood offers several irrigation solutions that are exempt from hosepipe bans. No hosepipe doesn’t have to mean no irrigation!

Irrigation solutions that are exempt from hosepipe bans

Drip or trickle systems are usually exempt, as they target water directly towards the roots of the plants. Not a single drop is wasted, and this type of automatic watering is considered 90% efficient, which is incredible. Dripline is perfect for laying in beds and borders, keeping shrubs, perennials and annuals healthy and happy.

But what about lawns? Nobody wants dripline coiled across the grass. It would be visible, and would also interfere with mowing and with the use of the lawn. Aren’t pop-up sprinklers the only option? No! At Rosewood we’ve introduced sub-surface dripline, which waters grass roots with the same level of efficiency as dripline in beds and borders.

Our picture shows the installation of a lawn-watering irrigation system using sub-surface dripline. As you can see, the dripline hose is laid on the bare soil in a pattern that will keep the whole area watered. Then a layer of topsoil is added, and finally the turf is laid on top. The controller programs timings so that water is emitted slowly and steadily, allowing the ground to stay moist rather than soaking. We suggest this to anyone having irrigation installed where new turf will be laid, but it’s also possible to retrofit where lawn exists already. We lift the turf carefully, lay the dripline, and relay the turf.
