When you think of garden irrigation, you probably imagine an array of lawn sprinklers over a large area of grass. Perhaps you think irrigation is only for bigger gardens with lots of borders and beds. However, patio pots and planters of different kinds also benefit immensely from automatic watering. Irrigation for living walls

Our living wall systems use planting troughs that have a water reservoir. Plants take up water from the reservoir as needed, making it impossible to overwater. The reservoir can be filled manually, of course, but where possible, we also install automatic irrigation.

Irrigation for living walls works on a simple system that fills the reservoir automatically instead of relying on customer input and judgement. At the time of installing the green wall, we work out how often the irrigation will need to run. We base this decision on the height of the vertical garden (how many troughs in the column) and how much sun it will receive. The irrigation is set to run at the required frequency. When it comes on, it fills the reservoirs without the customer having to worry about it.

Irrigation for other containers

Pots and other kinds of containers without reservoirs have a different kind of irrigation requirement. We all find watering containers harder than watering plants in the ground. In the ground, the soil stays moist for longer, but excess water drains away so roots don’t drown. However, in a pot, the growing medium dries out more quickly, but overcompensating by more watering can lead to plants standing in water and roots drowning. Automatic irrigation solves these issues!

Specialist pot-drippers make a huge difference to watering containers. While the irrigation system is switched on, the drippers emit water very slowly over a longish period. This ensures that soil never dries out completely, but it plants don’t have their feet in water.
